Development of 3GPP with 5G wireless technology for NTN networks
NTN has evolved into a catch-all word for any network including non-terrestrial flying objects. The 3GPP NTN work focuses on high-altitude platform stations, often known as International Mobile Telecommunications base stations or HIBS. A HIBS system offers mobile service in the same frequency ranges as used by terrestrial mobile networks.
Air-to-ground networks seek to provide in-flight connections for aircraft by deploying ground stations that function similarly to base stations (BSs) in terrestrial mobile networks. However, in an air-to-ground network, ground station antennas are up-tilted towards the sky, and ground station inter-site distances are substantially greater than in terrestrial mobile networks.
3GPP has prioritized 5G New Radio (NR)-based NTN. NR was created with forward compatibility, low latency support, new antenna technology, and spectrum flexibility in mind, including operation in low, mid, and high-frequency bands. This lays a solid framework for modifying NR to support NTNs. There are rising interest in huge Internet of Things (IoT) application cases based on NTNs that employ narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and Long-Term Evolution (LTE) for machine-type communication (LTE-M). As a result, 3GPP is investigating the viability of upgrading NB-IoT and LTE-M to enable NTN's release.
